What is a stray?
A dog is classed as a stray if found on a highway or public place or not under the charge of its keeper. If you allow your dog to stray, you could end up with more that a chat from your Local Authority Dog Warden.How to avoid a stray or missing pet.
- Ensure that your pet has identification.
- Collar and ID tag and a microchip or tattoo.
- Neutering and spaying your pets.
- Proper Training.
- Fenced in and secure gardens.
- Never leave your dog unattended or tied up outside shops.
- If left in your vehicle, ensure the vehicle is locked and secure.
- Remember to leave a window open for your pet. Dogs die in hot cars, it does not have to be summer!
Details of the dog will be kept at the LA offices and by the local police.
What happens if it is a weekend or out of office hours?
If your dog is picked up on a Friday and the dog warden has been unable to reunite you with your dog, it could be taken to Woodgreen or a local kennel. Again, police are notified of all dogs that have been taken to a shelter.
East Cambridgeshire District Council Dog Registration Scheme - this is a 24 hour service.
All dogs are required by law to wear a collar and identification showing the name of the owner. ECDC have set up a dog registration scheme to promote the principles of responsible dog ownership.
