Royal Canin French Bulldog

Royal Canin French BulldogHistory of the French Bulldog.

In the middle of the 19th Century, Nottingham was the place in England for Bulldog lovers but around 1860, many English workers started to move to Normandy and they brought with them, their Toy Bulldogs many of which were useful for keeping vermin numbers low.

In 1875 : Terrier cross bulldogs, with short face, short legs and power full constructed bodies were bred in Normandy but by 1880 most breeders and owners were living in Paris as these dogs had become increasingly popular.

1886 : The french Bouledogue made his « debut at  the Championship show in Le Jardin des Tuileries.

1888 : The first breed club, Bouledogue Club de France, was created in Paris and the first standard was written. At this time, the weight was between 12.5kg and 15 kg.

1898 : The name was changing in to the Club du Bouledogue Français, recognised by the French Kennel Club. During the next 20 years, the breed became one of the most popular in France!

The French Bulldog has remained the same since the 1900’s. A true medium breed a bitch is around 11 kg and a dog, around 13 kg.

Introducing Royal Canin’s Breed Health Nutrition Diet French Bulldog 26 Adult.

The main target for this product is promoting ideal muscle mass but also focusing on the supporting the joints, odour reduction and the French Bulldogs specific brachycephalic jaw.

The maintenance of ideal muscle mass requires an optimal supply of proteins, French Bulldog 26 contains 26% protein including LIP proteins with a digestibility guaranteed to exceed 90%, this gives the dog 62.8grams of protein for every 1000kcal of energy consumed.

The French Bulldog is muscular but also dynamic requiring a supply of energy sufficient to meet its needs. French Bulldog 26 utilises 18% fat to provide a diet containing 4140kcal/kg allowing the provision of enough energy to maintain daily activity without loosing condition with the additional benefit of a moderate feeding volume to reduce digestive overload.  L-carnitine levels are also supplemented by 100mg/kg to aid the body in the utilisation of stored fats as usable energy and to help promote lean muscle mass.

Musculoskeletal issues are the 2nd most common reason for veterinary consultation in this breed.  A massive body heavy for its size, can lead to constraints on the joints, which may also be exacerbated by the slightly short and curved limbs.  The French Bulldog is prone to joint issues particularly as he ages, with common signs including stiffness, slowing down on walks, a reluctance to walk up or down stairs and licking joints.

Providing support for the joints is key concern for this breed and so French Bulldog 26 contains Glucosamine and chondroitin to support healthy cartilage and the specific Omega 3 fatty acids EPA/DHA to help support healthy joint function.

Odour Reduction is a key part of the Bulldog 26 formulation, the breakdown of protein residues in the gut leads to fermentation and the production of odorous gasses.  The French bulldog is particularly prone to this and alongside fibre fermentation and the intake of air into the digestive tract during the process of ingestion it leads to an increased likely hood of flatulence.

The first way of helping to reduce fermentation within the gut is to limit the quantity of protein residue reaching the colon, this requires the inclusion of very highly digestible protein sources, which we term LIP and have a digestibility of at least 90%.  For example although poultry is a good source of protein and is 88% digestible it still allows 12% of the dogs intake i.e. 12g in 100 to be unusable and to reach the colon for fermentation. Compare this to Wheat Gluten which is a LIP Protein, wheat gluten is 99% digestible so only 1% reaches the colon, this significantly reduces the amount of putrefaction within the gut.

The second way of adding good digestion and reduced flatulence is by including a good balance of moderately fermentable probiotics into the diet, these fibres help to feed and nourish the good bacteria in the gut helping to increase their numbers and allow the gut to work more efficiently without the excess fermentation which some fibres encourage. In Royal Canin’s French Bulldog 26 we include both Fructo-oligo-saccharides and beet pulp.

The combination of less fibre residues for purification and a moderate level of fibre fermentation can significantly reduce flatulence; this alongside a correct eating behaviour encouraged by the unique French Bulldog 26 kibble promotes less gas and a reduced odour within the digestive tract.

By designing our tailor-made kibble, we took breeders remarks into consideration. Creating a kibble that would be easy to pick up that would not roll out of the feeding bowl and one that would allow the teeth to penetrate deeply enough into the kibble.

Supporting the sensitive sin of the French Bulldog is another key concern, prone to itching and irritation often characterised by red skin and the chewing of feet, support for the skins natural protective barrier function is needed.  The best way to think of the skin is like a brick wall, the skin cells are the bricks and ceramides act like cement holding the wall together, as with any barrier a small breach weakens the whole structure.

The skin is the bodies largest organ and this combined with its continuous state of repair and renewal make it very greedy for nutrients, specific proteins, Vitamin A, Biotin and a supply of Omega fatty acids are required.  Within Bulldog 26 Royal Canin also include their patented Skin Barrier Complex, a synergistic combination of 4 B vitamins and one amino acid which work together to help reinforce the effectiveness of the skin barrier.
