Weight management. The cocker spaniel is a naturally greedy dog and with his loving personality it is difficult to resist his request for treats and titbits, it is important to remember though that with todays companion dog lifestyle and increased incidence of neutering that weight gain is becoming and increasing problem even for those dogs with a naturally active predisposition.
Vision Support. Cataracts are a common side effect of aging and the cocker spaniel is at an increased risk of developing them due to their long life expectancy.
Cardiac Tone. Dilated Cardio-Myopathy is the cardiac disorder most commonly seen in Cocker spaniels although usually seen in Maxi and Giant breeds it is also linked to aging and so the Cocker Spaniel with its long life expectancy is also at risk.
The Cocker Spaniel is one of the breeds with a particularly sensitive skin for several reasons, an excessively reactive immune system when confronted with allergens, a predisposition to seborrhoea giving the appearance of greasy and scurf prone skin and lastly the occurrence of Vitamin A dematosis a rare condition found almost exclusively in this breed. As a dog prone to atopy they are also at increased risk of developing chronic otitis due to the way the ears hang forwards covering the ear opening & the narrow, hairy ear canals of the breed.
